Minutes read and approved

Treasurer report read and approved

Old Business: DCHA Horse Show was a success. We had 205 entries. Total money made was $4815.25, total expenses $1990.23, total amount cleared was $2825.02. Monetary classes and awards are as follows; DCHA Youth Reward-English Go As You Please—1st Ana Butler, 2nd Heather Gilmer; DCHA Youth Reward-Western Go As You Please – 1st Heather Gilmer, 2nd Ethan Hefner; DCHA High Points Award—Heather Gilmer; DCHA Good Sportsmanship Award—Ali Crouse; Youth member selling the most ads award (tied) Cassidy Garwood and Heather Gilmer. The local Focus magazine is doing a write up in June on our DCHA Horse Show. Thanks to all who worked and all who participated.

Doug Meredith; Report on Hamby Creek Trail, we’re still waiting to hear from the state. The landfill supervision has been changed from Raleigh to Mooresville. We do not think this will affect the trail.

Beverly Duval; Report on the NC Horse Council meeting held May 5, 2008. DCHA did get approved for the grant for Hamby Creek Trail. The Equine Extravaganza is coming up in Raleigh on July 11, 12 & 13. The Southern Horse Festival is the 1st weekend in December in Williamston, VA. NC Horse Council will be taking orders for special interest license plate. The cost is $50 each and they have to sell 300 before they will start printing them.

New Business: Klynt Nifong reported Tanglewood Park wants to open the trails again and a Polo Cross field. They are discussing maybe a facility for horse camping also. The trails would be just for horses.

Klynt Nifong explained more about the Equine Impact Study being done. Please if you receive a form fill it out and return. This can help our state in so many different ways for the horse industry. We need to let everyone know the horse industry is growing in NC.

Klynt Nifong announced our DCHA 10 Year Celebration is June 14, 2008 at Ogburn Stables in. A schedule of events for the day will be in the June newsletter. We hope everyone comes out and lets have a great day.

Our speaker this evening is Eric Shupe with Purina. We would like to say a big thank you to Lexington Farm and Garden for letting us meet here tonight. Thanks to Purina for a great BBQ dinner tonight also.

Eric is speaking tonight on The Cost of Feeding Your Horses. Eric explains the cost of feed is directly affected by the cost of ingredients to make the feed. The main ingredients to produce horse feeds have increased in cost by 50-100% over the last year. Grain prices have doubled in the last year. Eric pointed out though ingredients has doubled the price of a bag of feed has increased but not doubled. Purina constantly does research with horses to keep a feed that provides the needs for your horse at a reasonable price. Everyone needs to figure out a cost of feed per head per day to understand feed cost. Purina has 70 head of horses they use for research purposes. They check all aspects of nutrition in horses. They look at nutrients needed, digestion, palatability etc. Your feed needs to have optimal levels of nutrients as 1) protein, 2) vitamins, 3) energy and 4) minerals. When deciding on a feed you also need to consider the following 1) age of horse, 2) activity level, 3) body condition, 4) hay fed 5) pasture or forage available. Eric pointed out sometimes you may need to use a more costly feed which will end up costing you less per head to feed because you may feed less to meet the horses’ need.

Eric passed on info about an interactive website, omoleneuniversity.com, where you can learn more about horses. The segments are short and you can earn points. The points can be redeemed for free merchandise. Thanks Eric for a very informative evening.
