TRAIL RIDES AND INFORMATION

The 2010 Trail Ride schedule is on the web site under 'Trail Rides'.  We hope to have many of you join us this year.  It’s a wonderful time with each other and our horses.  Let us know if you need a ride and we’ll see if anyone has room.  Most of our rides are very suitable for your children.  Consider bringing them along and don’t forget their helmets.   Enjoy the trails you ride and be safe.  Enjoy these wonderful animals; horse, mules and donkeys, that God has given us.

Our Trail Ride for March is at the Pilot Mtn. Corridor Trail.

Directions:
Follow 52 North toward Pilot Mtn.  Take the Pinnacle exit (I think it’s exit 129).  Turn right at stop sign.  Go maybe a mile, cross over the RR tracks and turn left onto Old 52.  Go approx. 100 ft and make another left onto Surry Line Rd. and go back over the RR tracks.  Go approx. 1 to 1 1/2 mile and turn left at Culler Rd. .The parking lot is immediately to your right  (You will see a yellow Horse Crossing sign before you get to Culler Rd.)

As always on our rides, don’t forget your coggins.  Also, pack a lunch or snacks for the trail.  Please come be a part of this fun adventure called trail riding.  We have a lot of fun and fellowship on these rides and would love to see new faces and horses.

You can call Scott or me at 236-0155 and leave a message or you can email me at shelley71253@yahoo.com.  We will also let you know if there are any changes.  If a ride is cancelled due to weather, a message will be put on the DCHA website.

Our speaker tonight is Dr. Mark Hamrick of Lexington Large Animal. Dr. Hamrick is speaking on worming of equine. Parasites or worm in your horse can cause many health problems if not treated. A large strongyle penetrates the lining of the bowel and migrates into the blood vessels. Roundworms may cause colic, tapeworms infest in the small intestines, then enters the cecum area which may cause impactions, bots causes damage to the stomach lining, and pinworms can cause a itchy tail. This is not all the parasites to be concerned about, just some of them.
How do we treat all these parasites? The now recommended treatment is to do a fecal egg count to see how many parasites your horse has. Then treat your horse and recheck fecal egg count in 30-60 days. Retreat if needed.
Wormers come in a feed additive and as a paste or gel form. The feed additive wormers are simply added daily to the feed. The paste or gel wormer is given 3-4 times a year. You should only worm if your horse has a high egg count. Worming too much may cause a resistance of the parasite to the wormer. The following is recommended; daily wormer with ivermectin 2 times a year or Quest 1 time a year and Ivermectin 2 times a year.

We want to say a big thank you to Dr. Hamrick for speaking tonight on parasites and answering all our questions.

 Adjourned at 8:15pm.
